History

The American Curl was born of a natural genetic mutation and first appeared in a cat named Shulamith. Shulamith was a stray, black kitten that was found and taken in by her owners, Joe and Grace Ruga in Lakewood, California. Shulamith had kittens with another cat that had curled ears and two of them had curly ears. It was found by a geneticist that the trait was caused by a dominant gene. The American Curls have been bred since 1983.
