American Curl
Description
The American Curl is recognized because of their distinct ears that curl backwards. Their ears take their permanent, curled shape when a kitten is about 4 months old. It is a medium-sized cat that weighs 5-10 pounds on average. Their lifespan is about 12-16 years. Their hair can be long or short and is silky. It comes is many colors, such as silver, chocolate, orange, and white. They are described as a people-loving cat because of their friendly and gentle personality. They are well-suited for anyone who is willing to love them and give them a home.
History
The American Curl was born of a natural genetic mutation and first appeared in a cat named Shulamith. Shulamith was a stray, black kitten that was found and taken in by her owners, Joe and Grace Ruga in Lakewood, California. Shulamith had kittens with another cat that had curled ears and two of them had curly ears. It was found by a geneticist that the trait was caused by a dominant gene. The American Curls have been bred since 1983.

- The American Curl is referred to as the "Peter Pan of cats" because of their kitten-like personality.
